2020 Ballot Statement

My education and qualifications are: As Alameda’s only Hispanic mayor, twice-elected AUSD Board Member, and a long-term volunteer [Pro bono legal services for domestic violence victims, Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), Alameda Museum, PTA Council, Athletic Boosters], I’m a proven compassionate leader.

As an outside-the-box thinker, I led efforts saving Alameda Animal Shelter, Corica Park Golf Complex, Jim’s on the Course, and Jean Sweeney Open Space Park, brought The Ocean Cleanup Project, and developed sister cities and Art in City Hall. I supported anti-discrimination, fair rent stabilization, minimum wage policies, workforce and affordable housing, safe bike paths, and opposed corporate handouts and overdevelopment.

Shockingly, the audit identified “material weaknesses” and “significant deficiencies,” the General Fund Forecast showed annual expenses exceed revenues, exhausting reserves in four years, yet City Council approved another $3 million attorneys, firefighters, and staff. Mismanagement has led to $400 million unfunded pension liabilities, decaying infrastructure, gridlock, million dollar legal settlements, new taxes, high usage fees for parks, libraries, and permits, and no COVID-19 testing center. Grand Jury and District Attorney investigations found Charter violations and police failures. City Hall is failing us and pricing many out.

We must change course. I’m independent, not beholden to special interests. Let’s implement my 2017 proposed Citizen Police Oversight Committee to improve policing, keep Article 26 for leverage against unscrupulous developers, and work together for Alamedans. I am asking for your vote.
